Medicine Agency presents Meat Show, a group exhibition featuring work exploring perceptions of meat, meat products, and the meat industry. Looking to represent a variety of viewpoints in addressing the theme, curator Crystal Townsend invites a dozen California artists to interpret meat and the industry and culture surrounding it through various media, including installation, sculpture, drawing, and painting. Featured artists include Jason Vivona, Nikki Lau, Oliver Black, Helen Bayly, Audrey Erickson, Lori Koenig, Porous Walker, Jason C. Arnold, Albert Reyes, Aiyana Udesen, Kelly Allen, and Bo Heimlich.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Jason Vivona currently resides in San Francisco where he paints and draws on paper, then cuts it up, stains it with wine or coffee or tea or whatever he is drinking, then sews it all back together, the end result being a completely cohesive, realized quilted image, often laced with satiric cultural references. His work has been exhibited in numerous galleries across the United States, Japan and Mexico.
San Francisco-based sculpture and installation artist Nikki Lau draws on aspects of everyday life to create interactive sculptures and installations that incorporate the whimsical with introspective observations about life and the value that we place on the objects around us.
Recently returned from his cross-country exhibition tour, The Tank’s Half Full, Medicine Agency veteran Oliver Black presents new work for Meat Show.
San Francisco-based painter Helen Bayly creates paintings which touch on themes of industrialization and its interactions with nature and human culture, highlighting the plight of the world as it clashes with modern technology.
Audrey Erickson- Growing up on a farm in the middle of nowhere Midwest (ie. Bowler, Wisconsin) has its advantages: a deep, unending connection to the natural world, a lot of free time with which to hone creativity, and a complete lack of pretense when it comes to making art. All of these aspects led Lori Koenig to work in various art mediums, topically handling issues such as dead coral reefs, loss of habitat, and species interdependency.
Porous Walker – F**k Porous Walker. That guy’s a douche. Plus his work is inexpensive.
Jason C. Arnold likes to paint. He also likes to skateboard. He taught himself how to paint by going to the Legion of Honor, which is a good place to go if you want to see how the pros did it. Now Jason paints skateboarding life in San Francisco.
Known for his satirical drawings and prints on the insides of old book covers, LA- based Albert Reyes received his degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at the Art Institute of San Francisco. He has shown his work throughout the US, including shows at San Francisco’s White Walls Gallery and Fecal Face Gallery, as well as internationally.
Hawaiian-born Aiyana Udesen resides with her friend and collaborator, Matt Furie, in the foggy city of San Francisco, where she indulges her loves of mice, tank fish, succulents, and Duran Duran. She likes to draw, and will show you how, too, in her “How To Draw”
Kelly Allen- “I have been a maker of objects and images for as long as I can remember. Obsessive creation keeps me going. Having… completed my MFA in Drawing at Kendall College of Art and Design, my current focus has been on gouache and graphite drawings on paper…I revel in mysteries, oddities, beauty, and laughing as hard and often as I can.”
Bo Heimlich- On a recent expedition to the Galapagos Islands, Bo discovered the ability to communicate with sea slugs, which, contrary to popular belief, are the world’s fourth most intelligent organism. After learning of this new talent Bo has spent numerous hours gathering funds to help rebuild the Equatorial Cephalaspidea Community Center.
